Our Addon Client program isn’t digitally-signed (more on this below). As such, browsers and Windows Defender will caution you against downloading and installing such software (which can potentially be dangerous for your PC). This - them warning us - is indeed a good thing: Please always be cautious about software you download and install to your computer! Regardless, the main aspect about these warnings is: although they look serious, in reality what they mean is “the software in question lacks a digital signature”.
Aforementioned digital signatures, also known as “code-signing certificates” are authentication mechanisms, serving one purpose - to confirm the software author and guarantee that the code has not been altered or corrupted since it was signed. Generally, any piece of software can be re-packaged by any person. A mal-intended party can easily take any software without its author’s permission, add a dangerous code into it; then re-package and distribute the final installer/executable. When a software vendor digitally signs their software, the end users downloading and using them know for sure that the original software packaged by the vendor hasn’t been tampered with since it was signed. The software is 100% authentic/original.
In past, it was relatively easy for physical persons (e.g. single developers, non-corporates etc) to obtain code-signing certificates. But unfortunately, nowadays it’s become literally impossible for non-corporate entities to do so. Only companies can purchase these certificates now. These so called “standard” (as opposed to EV - extended validation) code-signing certificates - which used to be available to individuals and small teams - currently are being sold only by a single company (Sectigo, formerly known as Comodo), and only to businesses.
As a result, we were unable to buy one and sign our desktop Client.
Please always download and install software you trust!
In our case, please always download our Addon Client from our website: https://guildplanner.pro. We don’t publish our software on 3rd party websites!!! If one day we decide to do that, we will most definitely digitally sign it.
To by-pass Windows Defender warning, please click “More info” and then press “Run anyway” button (see screenshots below):
As a recommended alternative, you can also download and install our desktop Client from Windows Store (Windows 10/11 users only!). In contrary to the Standalone version, the Store version of the Client is “code-signed”.
